What is a County Commissioner?

What is a county commissioner and what do they do exactly? The short answer is that a county commissioner is an elected official who is responsible for how the entire county operates.

A county in Oklahoma is divided into three districts, with each district electing a commissioner to serve as a member of the Board of County Commissioners, the government body which administrates the county.

The Association of County Commissioners of Oklahoma gives a detailed account of the duties and responsibilities of a county commissioner. The list of responsibilities for a county commissioner is quite extensive, covering a wide range of operations.

Some of the tasks they do are pretty plain to see. Work done to the county highway system is readily apparent to anyone driving up and down the county roads.  Most of the work however is not as visible as road improvements, but has as much if not more affect on citizens lives than smooth roads.

Making financial plans for the county’s budget dictates whether or not their will be enough money for public work projects like roads and bridges or enough money to fund government entities like the Sheriff’s Department. Organizing and directing 911 services for the county affects the response time of emergency services responding to medical calls like heart attacks or car wrecks.

County commissioners are responsible for auditing the accounts of all officers handling county money, which is of no small concern when money in a county is tight and every dollar spent well could mean the difference between a law enforcement agency being available 24/7 or just 9 to 5.
